CAS: George A. Miller Visiting Professors & Scholars

The George A. Miller Programs Committee accepts applications for partial funding of visiting faculty appointments, offering a means for bringing to our campus men and women of outstanding achievement in academic or public life to participate in scholarly, professional, or creative programs. Residencies may be for as long as a semester or an entire academic year. In view of the crowded schedules of many visitors, they are often arranged for shorter periods. However, the minimum stay for a GAM residency is 5 business days.

The visitors may be asked to teach a special course or seminar, participate in ongoing or self-initiated research activities, interact informally with students and faculty, and/or take part in interdisciplinary seminars arranged by the host department. In addition, these visitors will be invited to participate in the activities of the Center for Advanced Study community of scholars. They should not be assigned to teach regularly scheduled courses, fill in for faculty members on leave, or carry out regular faculty duties.

Selection Criteria

Criteria include the nominee's excellence as a scholar, artist, or professional; potential contribution to the life of the campus; and anticipated level of interaction with faculty and students in the Host and Cohost unit(s) and in cross-disciplinary venues. Proposals that cross disciplinary lines are strongly encouraged.

The selection committee also considers the sponsoring unit(s) commitment to the appointment (including financial support, recognizing that available resources vary widely) and equitable distribution over time of awards among departments and colleges.
